Venous Insufficiency

Chronic venous insufficiency is a vein disease in the legs. Veins take deoxygenated blood back to the heart. The veins in the leg makes use of valves to work against gravity. Dysfunctional valves allow blood to leak back down towards the feet. The pooled blood increases pressure and eventually leads to spider and varicose veins. Signs of venous insufficiency include leg cramps, itching, leg ulcers, tightness in the calves, and leg or ankle swelling.
