Top Creative Writing Exercises: from daizy burks's blog

Change the point of view in a story:

Take a scene—or a chapter, if you're feeling brave—from one of your favorite books and recreate it. Write it from the perspective of a different character. You'll swap out the main character in this exercise to examine how the story may be conveyed in another way.

Take the thrilling conclusion of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and rewrite it with Ron as the protagonist. Another way to approach this creative activity is to keep the primary character but change the POV. Rewrite a scene in the third person if the writer has told a story in the first person. When you swap points of view, what information is lost? In this new approach of narrating the story, what does the reader know or not know?

Prompts for creative writing include:

Use writing prompts, often known as tale starters, to develop writing ideas. A writing prompt is a short excerpt or sentence that a writer uses to start composing a story on the spot. The online ebook promotion team said that you can look up writing prompts online, pick a sentence out of a magazine at random, or use a brilliant line from a well-known work as the start of your short scene.

Write a letter to yourself when you were younger:

Have you ever wished you could tell your younger self something? Now's your opportunity to shine. Consider a topic you'd like to discuss, such as a noteworthy event, and write a letter to yourself when you were young as if you were a different person. Give guidance or convey a message that you wish you had heard as a youngster or a young adult.

Create a flash fiction story:

Write spontaneous flash fiction, a short story of 500 words or less, at your computer or with a pen and paper. This is not the same as free writing. With no fixed guidelines, free writing generates a stream of consciousness. All of the essential components of a story arc, such as plot, conflict, and character development, are required in flash fiction, albeit in a shortened form.

Make fictitious advertising:

Pick a random word from a nearby book or newspaper and create a pretend advertisement for it. Write one ad in a formal, abbreviated newspaper classified format to require you to pay special attention to the word choice to sell the item.

Then develop one for an online marketplace that allows for longer, more casual wording, such as Craigslist. Describe the item and persuade the reader to purchase it in each one.
